End of the Summer

Today's ADAD theme is "I Dislike"!
I don't like that there is only one week left of summer vacation
before I go back to work as a teacher!

ADAD I Dislike

So what did I do for this ADAD photo?
I started looking for a photo background and ended up
looking up photos of one-room school houses.

Mason Street Schoolhouse
Museum at Old Town San Diego

This old school house is a museum in Old Town San Diego.
I have visited it more than once. It was the first public schoolhouse in San Diego.
This is what I used for the background photo.

The schoolhouse below is from Raton, New Mexico.
It is currently housed on the property of the living history museum
El Rancho de Las Golondrinas.

Even though my search started out for a background for today's photo,
my inner teacher took over, looking for vintage and current photos of
old one room schoolhouses and a sense of the history of education of children.

Indio Public School

Indio Public School

What I found is that the education of children outside of the home
at local public schools instead of private boarding schools
has been highly dependent on the community and region
that they lived in, the resources of families and communities,
and the time period in which they were educated.

Sod School

Marquiss School

Some locations were remote and very rural. Some time periods
and areas were marked with a greater poverty.

Depression Era

Taos, New Mexico

Other areas and other time periods had more resources.
They had nicer buildings, and children dressed in clean, nice clothes.

How has the quality and experience of education changed
in the United States during the past 200 years?

West Virginia

Is it reasonable to expect that education become a national
standard like a manufactured product that fails to honor individual and
community strengths and needs and fails to look at
how families and communities may not have equal resources?

West Virginia

I do enjoy my summers off!
It is time for me to start transitioning back into my life
as a teacher in 2015.

Good-bye to a good summer!
