The Dollhouse

At the beginning of December,
I decided that I really wanted a dollhouse.
After much consideration and obsessive thinking,
I chose the Country Cottage by Rocky Mountain Woodcrafts.

After it had sat around in the box for about a week,
I finally opened the box.
My initial reaction was
"What have I gotten myself into?!!!"

After I had gotten myself together, looked at the pieces,
and reminded myself that I could do it,
I set out to assemble the dollhouse.

I started the week before my 2 week Christmas vacation.

Day 1
I assembled the bottom floor, sides and middle floor.

Day 2
The next day, I was still feeling ambitious,
so I assembled the foundation and added the front wall.

Ella groaned and wondered how long it would take
to finish it.

I rested through the next weekend as it was the beginning
of my Christmas vacation.
On Monday, my PukiPuki unexpectedly arrived
and took over my attention.
I didn't resume construction until Christmas day.

Day 3
I put the roof with the gable on top of the dollhouse.

A few days later, I finally went Home Depot to select
paint colors.

Day 4
I painted the outside and painted and assembled the porch.

At midnight of New Year's Eve,
the village idiots shot guns into the air to welcome
in the New Year, waking me up.
These photos were taken shortly after midnight
showing the work done on December 31st.

I realized that my vacation would soon be ending,
and decided that I wanted the basic construction
as finished as possible by the time I went back to work.

Day 5
More painting and wallpapering the upstairs rooms.

January 1, 2015

I spent the most of the next day continuing to work
on paint, wallpapering the main floor,
and assembling and painting the staircase.

Day 6
More paint, wallpaper, and adding the wood floor.

January 2, 2015

I have ordered wallpaper for the kitchen,
and will end up doing baseboards and other touch-ups.
If I am not totally burnt out tomorrow,
I may work on the outside trims, windows and doors.

Day 7
(post blog update)
Painting and applying the trim for the corners and the bottom edges.
Painting the windows and the door, which are not glued in at this point.

I love this house and how it is looking like a dollhouse.
It is looking like a reflection of me and what I love!
I can't wait to finish it and start adding furniture
and other decorative pieces.

REFLECTION:
I am glad that I chose to do a dollhouse during
my Christmas vacation.
I am also really glad that I chose not only a high quality dollhouse,
but a small dollhouse!
Reminding myself that this is a do-able project and that it
just isn't that big has kept me going.

There are small imperfections along the way,
but it has reminded me that 2015 is brand new,
ready to be filled with a fresh start and whatever I
decide to make of it!

  2. This is a FABULOUS project. You are extraordinarily wise to buy a good quality kit - the cheap kits are what I call "splinterkits" - I can't bring myself to put together the small, free kit I have here. You've made great progress over the break and I love the photos that you're sharing on Flickr as well as discovering you have a diary here of your work - I love behind the scenes and diy type reports :-) My dolls and I shall be following your progress and cheering from the sidelines.
